Day 159 - Show Rather Than Tell

Today, I’m updating some industry partners on the current state of some software (one of the key deliverables in what I’ve set out to do with the fellowship). In the ease of autopilot, I throw I was going to throw together some slides to tell my collaborators where we’re at. That’s not what’s going to happen.

Instead of telling these people what tremendously tantalizing progress we’ve made (insert sale person levels of enthusiasm here), I’ve decided instead to live demo the code as it works. In other words, I’m showing the progress rather than telling or preaching or lecturing.

It’s a little like the additional richness of life you get from a video versus a still photograph. The dimension of time tells you a lot in its own right. And in showing these collaborators not just what this code does but when it does it and how long it takes, adds significantly more interactivity and dynamism to the meeting than could ever be achieved in a slide deck.

With a live demo, you place the element of the unknown in front of your audience’s eyes. You gift them the chance to ask “what if you do this instead of that?”. Who knows? Therein, might be the question that leads to the breakthrough you were never expecting and hadn’t designed.

In the work that you want to share, how might you show rather than tell?

If you have a question for Marc, upload an audio recording for it to be featured on a later Q&A episode!
