New Year’s resolutions are easy to set and difficult to maintain. It’s easy to buy gym gear but tougher to put it on, tougher still to soak it in your own sweat. By contrast, a year in review is more insightful, and potentially more motivating.

With my own balanced interests between academia and entrepreneurship, I’m grateful to have learned of the concept of a letter to shareholders. The leader of a company will review the year to their shareholders, and paint the vision going forward. You don’t need to be a CEO to borrow and use such a concept. For yourself, your team, those in your care, a letter of the year in review can serve to identify the genuine resolutions or commitments you can and WILL commit to in the year ahead.

Consider your year in review before your year in the new.
